In World of WarcraftEdit

It can be noted that, at the end of the fight, Kil'jaeden does not die. Instead the magics of the Sunwell simply react against him, and he is pulled back through it and into the Twisting Nether. It is his very large necklace that rips off and lands on the surface of the Sunwell after he sinks in that is looted by players.

After Kil'jaeden's defeat in the Sunwell, Mal'Ganis (who was revealed to be alive) returned to his homeworld to gather his forces. He knew that Arthas was already defeated by Tirion Fordring and the Argent Crusade, but he was angry that he wanted to destroy Arthas since he held a grudge for defeating him.

Entering to Hellfire Peninsula, Mal'Ganis arrived to the Throne of Kil'jaeden. He went on to search for some answers within the throne in order to free Kil'jaeden from the Sunwell, but there was no actual evidence.
